Is it possible to eat healthy and sustainably at the same time? Yes, according to a study presented in Oslo on 17th January, by Eat-Lancet.
The Eat-Lancet commission, with over 30 scientists from all over the world, has established a series of guidelines for a diet which provides healthy nutrition and is also sustainable for Earth.
Health is also a question of nutrition. This is true for us and even more so for the planet. It is estimated that by 2050 the Earth will be inhabited by almost 10 billion people. Therefore, finding a diet which protects the environment is a fundamental prerogative.
So what suggestions does this group of experts have for us? What emerges from the commission's analysis is the need to improve our food production and consumption practices.
Have no fear, all is not lost. We can all do our bit, by restoring the value of certain habits passed down by our grandparents.
The Mediterranean Diet
Vegetables, legumes and wholegrain cereals, without demonizing meat, fish and dairy products - if consumed in moderation. These are the premises for a diet which promises to protect your health and the planet at the same time. A diet based on "poor" ingredients, which favors light foods, fresh and seasonal products, without preventing you from occasionally indulging in richer and more elaborate meals.
In a word, the good old Mediterranean Diet of our grandparents, one of the healthiest and most balanced ones in the world.
